Stay Calm and Pull Over Safely
If you feel a sudden loss of handling or hear a flapping noise, don't brake hard or swerve. Gradually slow down, turn on your hazard lights, and pull over to a safe, flat spot away from traffic. A car park or wide shoulder is ideal.
Assess the Situation
Before getting out of the car, check your mirrors and make sure it's safe. If you're on a busy road, exit from the passenger side. Put on your hi-vis vest if you have one.
Option 1: Change to a Spare
If you have a spare tyre. Can't change it yourself? Our mobile tyre service will come to you anywhere in Franklin and feel confident:
- Loosen the wheel nuts slightly before jacking up the car
- Place the jack on the correct jacking point (check your manual)
- Raise the car until the flat tyre is off the ground
- Remove the nuts and swap the wheel
- Hand-tighten the nuts in a star pattern
- Lower the car and fully tighten the nuts
Important: Space saver (temporary) spares should not be driven above 80 km/h and are not for long-distance use. Get to a tyre shop as soon as possible.
Option 2: Use a Tyre Repair Kit
Many modern cars come with a tyre repair kit (sealant and compressor) instead of a spare. These work well for small punctures but won't fix a blowout or sidewall damage. Follow the kit instructions and drive slowly to the nearest tyre shop.
