What Is Tyre Rotation?
Tyre rotation is the practice of moving your tyres from one position on the vehicle to another — typically front to back and sometimes side to side — to ensure they wear evenly. Front tyres wear faster than rears on front-wheel-drive vehicles — it's one of the top ways to extend tyre life. Front tyres also wear faster than rears on front-wheel-drive vehicles (most NZ cars), so rotation extends the life of the whole set.
Why Bother With Tyre Rotation?
Without rotation, your front tyres may wear out 30-50% faster than the rears. This means you'd need to replace just two tyres more frequently, and running mismatched tyre wear between axles affects handling and braking — especially in NZ's wet conditions. Regular rotation means all four tyres wear evenly and can be replaced together at the end of their life.
When to Rotate
The general recommendation is every 8,000-10,000km or every 6 months, whichever comes first. A good habit is to rotate when you have your oil changed or at your regular service interval. Some signs you've left it too long:
- Noticeably more wear on front tyres vs rears
- The vehicle feels different in wet conditions
- One end of the car seems noisier than the other
Rotation Patterns
Front-wheel drive (most NZ cars): Front tyres move straight to the rear. Rear tyres cross to the opposite front position.
Rear-wheel drive / AWD: Rear tyres move straight to the front. Front tyres cross to opposite rear positions.
Directional tyres: Can only be swapped front-to-back on the same side (they have a specific rotation direction).
What Does It Cost in NZ?
Tyre rotation at Carter's Tyres Pukekohe is an affordable service that typically takes 20-30 minutes. We check tread depth, inspect for damage, and adjust pressures as part of the rotation. It's one of the cheapest ways to extend your tyre investment.
